Trane builds HVAC equipment that handles hot, dry inland summers and cool coastal mornings better than most brands, and Cold Harbour Heating and Air Los Angeles provides independent Trane service in Los Angeles across every part of the basin. We repair, maintain, and install Trane furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps from the San Fernando Valley to the Westside, with written pricing before any work begins and a 365-Day Done Right Promise on every repair. As an independent Trane service provider, we are not authorized by or affiliated with Trane, but our techs have worked on these systems for over 15 years, solving problems most companies misdiagnose. If your Trane is misbehaving, call (213) 531-5904.
Why Trust Cold Harbour Heating and Air Los Angeles for Your Trane HVAC?
Victor Mancini, our owner, grew up in Boyle Heights not far from the 6th Street Bridge, and he learned HVAC at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College from instructors who were working techs. They taught him to fix the root cause, not the symptom, and that approach has stuck. Today, our technicians see every Trane configuration imaginable across Trane repair in Glendale and the wider Los Angeles area: original mid-century XL condensers in Sunland, RunTru units in Koreatown apartment buildings, and XV20i heat pumps in hillside new construction.
Trane systems have their own engineering language. Communicating thermostats, Spine Fin coil chemistry, ECM blower electronics, specific refrigerant charge tolerances. Ours know the vocabulary. We carry OEM-compatible capacitors, contactors, high-limit switches, and blower modules so most common failures get fixed on the first visit, not after a parts order. Every repair includes a written guarantee valid for 365 days. If it fails inside that year, we return and correct the work at no charge.
Styles & brands we work with

Common Trane HVAC Problems We Fix in Los Angeles
- ComfortLink II thermostat lockouts after a power blink. Trane’s communicating thermostat and air handler lose their handshake after even a brief outage, leaving the system dead with a “system malfunction” code. We see this constantly in neighborhoods like Los Feliz and Atwater Village where DWP power flickers during summer heat. The fix involves re-establishing communication and often replacing a low-voltage fuse or the thermostat’s surge-weakened board.
- Formicary corrosion on older Spine Fin coils. Trane’s aluminum Spine Fin coils on XR and XL units from the 2000s are susceptible to pinhole leaks caused by formic acid in the air, a bigger problem near the coast where salt and marine layer moisture accelerate corrosion. In Santa Monica, Venice, and Playa del Rey, we regularly find coils that look fine on the outside but are leaking refrigerant through microscopic channels.
- ECM blower motor failures in Hyperion and XV air handlers. Variable-speed ECM motors run hot when restrictive ductwork drives up static pressure. Many older Los Angeles homes, especially mid-century stucco tract houses with undersized returns, push these motors past their design limits. The motor fails, the system blinks error codes, and the house goes warm.
- Failed crankcase heaters on Trane heat pumps. Heat pumps in hillside areas like Mount Washington and Eagle Rock rely on crankcase heaters to keep refrigerant from pooling in the compressor on cool mornings. When the heater fails, liquid slugging damages the compressor on startup. We check these on every Trane heat pump service call, because a $30 part failing can destroy a $1,800 compressor.
- Capacitor and contactor failures on Trane XR16 condensers. This is the most common call we get. LA’s hot, dry afternoons followed by cool marine-layer nights stress electrical components through repeated thermal cycling. Capacitors weaken, contactors pit, and the unit short-cycles or refuses to start. We stock OEM-grade replacements so this is usually a same-visit fix.
Trane Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
We use genuine OEM Trane parts when the model is in production and lead times allow. For older Trane systems with discontinued parts, we source from trusted aftermarket suppliers with proven reliability: capacitors, contactors, blower modules, pressure switches, and defrost boards. We never install cheap universal boards or mismatched components on a communicating Trane system. It doesn’t work.
On the repair-versus-replace question, we give you the honest math. If the repair costs less than half of what a comparable replacement would run and the system has healthy years ahead, we repair it and put that in writing. If the fix is a patched-together repair on a leaking Spine Fin coil or a cracked heat exchanger that will fail again within a season or two, we tell you straight. We don’t patch leaking coils. We don’t band-aid cracked heat exchangers. A repair should stay repaired. Call (213) 531-5904 if you want an honest read on your Trane.
Our Trane Service Process – Step by Step
- 1
Diagnosis. A technician arrives in a uniform, introduces himself, and listens to exactly what the Trane system is doing. Then he takes readings: refrigerant pressures, subcooling and superheat, temperature splits, amp draws, and static pressure. On communicating Trane systems, he checks for stored error codes in the ComfortLink II or Nexia history.
- 2
Written price before any work. Once the problem is found, we hand you a written price for the repair or installation. That price does not change at the door. You decide before a tool comes out.
- 3
Repair, install, or replacement. We use OEM Trane parts when possible, verified aftermarket components when availability demands, and we test every circuit and load after completing the work.
- 4
System test. The tech runs the system through at least one full heating and cooling cycle, measures temperature splits at the supply and return, and verifies refrigerant charge against Trane’s published charging charts.
- 5
Written guarantee. Every repair comes with a warranty on paper: 365 days. If the repair fails in that window, we come back and correct it at no charge. No call, no argument.

AfterTrane Products We Service & Install in Los Angeles
We work on the full residential Trane lineup. The XR14 and XR16 air conditioners are the workhorses of Trane in Burbank and Los Angeles backyards, and we repair them weekly. The XV18 and XV20i variable-speed heat pumps are common in newer hillside construction, where their efficiency and quiet operation matter. The S9V2 and S9X1 gas furnaces show up in pre-war bungalows and mid-century homes across the basin. The RunTru by Trane line appears frequently in multi-family buildings and budget-conscious installs. We service all of them, and we stock common Trane components to keep turnaround tight.
We Also Service These Brands
Trane isn’t the only brand in Los Angeles homes, and we’re not a one-trick shop. Our techs are trained on nine major residential HVAC brands. In particular, we frequently service Carrier and Lennox equipment across the basin, so if your home has mixed equipment or you’re comparing brands for a replacement, we can work with what’s there.
FAQs – Trane HVAC Service in Los Angeles
In most cases, a voltage spike or sag during the outage corrupts the memory on the thermostat’s board, or the low-voltage fuse on the air handler control board blows. The thermostat loses communication with the air handler and locks the system out to prevent damage. We reset the communication, check the low-voltage circuit, and replace the fuse or thermostat board if needed. If it keeps happening, we install a surge protector on the system, which is cheap insurance in Los Angeles neighborhoods where power flickers are common. Call (213) 531-5904 and we can walk through it.
Almost never. Spine Fin coils on older Trane XR and XL units are aluminum and nearly impossible to patch reliably. Once they develop a pinhole leak from formicary corrosion, more pinholes typically follow within a season or two. We don’t patch leaking Spine Fin coils. We’ll tell you the cost of a coil replacement and the cost of a new condenser, and let you decide with both numbers in hand. If the coil is out of production, replacement is usually the only honest option.
Yes, and most Trane heat pumps in Los Angeles do run mostly in cooling. But even a heat pump that almost never heats still needs its reversing valve, defrost board, and crankcase heater checked every year. A failed crankcase heater can destroy the compressor on a cool March morning, and a stuck reversing valve turns every cooling call into a confusing one. We service every part of the heat pump, not just the parts keeping you cool in August.
No. The XV18 is one of Trane’s quietest variable-speed heat pumps, and a loud startup usually means a failing compressor blanket, a weakened run capacitor, or debris on the fan blade. It can also point to a refrigerant charge issue causing the compressor to cycle hard. We diagnose the start circuit and the unit’s running pressures to isolate the noise.
We install both. Trane mini-splits are becoming popular in older Los Angeles homes where ductwork is inadequate or non-existent, like converted garages, room additions, and pre-war bungalows without central HVAC. We install ducted Trane equipment and ductless mini-split systems, and we’ll recommend whichever makes sense for the actual layout of your home. Estimates are free. Call (213) 531-5904.
