Lennox mini-split installation in Los Angeles typically runs $4,130 to $8,850 for a complete single-zone or multi-zone system, depending on capacity, line-set length, and whether you’re replacing an existing unit or starting fresh. We stock Lennox-compatible mini-split components on our trucks and can usually schedule installation within 5 to 7 business days of your written estimate, not weeks out. Most homeowners call us after a compressor quits on an aging unit or a leak has gone undiagnosed long enough that refrigerant pressures have wrecked the system’s ability to cool.
What we see across Los Angeles, from Boyle Heights bungalows to Mid-Wilshire condos, is that mini-splits fail quietly first. A hiss near the line-set cover. A bedroom that runs three degrees warmer than the rest of the flat. A condensate stain creeping down a stucco wall. By the time the unit throws an error code, the question isn’t usually “can this be patched” but “is patching this going to cost more than it’s worth over the next two LA summers.” That’s the call we help you make honestly.
Which Lennox Models This Applies To
Lennox has sold mini-split systems under the MLA, MPB, and MPA series lines for years, and we install and service all three families. The MLA series covers single-zone and multi-zone heat pump models from 9,000 BTU up to 36,000 BTU. The MPB series is the mid-tier line, common in Los Angeles ADUs and garage conversions. The MPA series is Lennox’s premium inverter-driven line with higher SEER ratings, which matters in LA County where inland valleys climb past 100 degrees for weeks at a stretch.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t discover until a part fails: Lennox mini-split outdoor units are not interchangeable across series without a matching indoor air handler. You can’t bolt an MPA condenser to an older MLA wall mount and expect the inverter boards to communicate. The model plate on the outdoor unit’s right side lists the exact compatible indoor pairings. When we quote an installation, we verify that pairing before we order anything. We also keep Carrier and Trane mini-split components available for homes with mixed-brand setups from previous owners, which is surprisingly common in LA’s older housing stock.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Lennox OEM parts carry the factory warranty and exact electrical specs for your model’s inverter board. Quality aftermarket contactors and capacitors exist and work well for basic repairs. But for the inverter board itself and the compressor, we recommend OEM. Those two components talk to each other in ways a generic board can’t always replicate, and when the communication fails, you eat the labor cost twice. We’ll show you the price difference on paper before any work starts, and you decide.

Signs Your Lennox Mini-Split Installation Is Failing
- Hissing or bubbling sounds near the line set. Refrigerant is escaping through a flare fitting or a pinhole in the copper. Left alone, the system runs low, the compressor works harder, and eventually locks out on a thermal overload.
- One zone cools poorly while another runs fine. With multi-zone Lennox systems, a failing electronic expansion valve or a kinked branch line can starve one indoor unit of refrigerant. The outdoor unit might still run, masking the problem until that zone’s coil freezes.
- Water leaking from the indoor unit or dripping down the wall. The condensate line is blocked or the drain pan has cracked. In Los Angeles humidity swings, this crops up after monsoonal moisture rolls through in late summer.
- The outdoor unit short-cycles. It kicks on for sixty seconds, shuts down, and repeats. This points to a failing capacitor, an overcharged system, or a control board that’s reading false pressure readings. Short-cycling kills compressors faster than almost anything else.
- An error code that won’t clear after a power cycle. Lennox units store fault codes in the indoor board. If you cut power at the breaker, wait a minute, and the code returns, the underlying failure is real, not a fluke. Write down the code before you reset so we can identify the likely cause over the phone.
The short answer on what fails first: flare fittings and capacitors. Flare fittings at the line-set connections are the single most common refrigerant leak point on Lennox installations in Los Angeles, especially on units that have been through a few minor earthquakes. And capacitors simply age out, like a car battery. Neither failure means the system is junk. It means the install or the maintenance had a weak point. We find it, quote it, and fix it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Complete Lennox mini-split installation in Los Angeles runs $4,130 to $8,850 depending on system sizing, number of zones, and the work involved in running line sets and wiring. A single-zone 12,000 BTU system for a bedroom or ADU typically lands between $4,130 and $5,200. A three-zone system covering 2,000 square feet tends to run $6,800 to $8,850. Those prices include the outdoor condenser, indoor air handler or handlers, line sets, condensate drainage, electrical disconnect, pad or wall bracket, city permit, and full startup and testing.
Every installation quote from Cold Harbour Heating and Air Los Angeles is a written fixed price. It’s handed to you before any work starts, and it does not change at the door. Not if the job runs long. Not if we find unexpected framing in the wall. The price we write is the price you pay. The installation itself is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if any part of our install fails inside a year, we return and correct it at no charge. The Lennox factory warranty on equipment runs separately, typically 5 years parts with registration, up to 10 years for the compressor on some series. Victor Mancini will walk you through what’s covered and for how long before you sign anything.
DIY or Call Us?
Let’s be straight about the safety piece first. A mini-split installation involves high-voltage electrical wiring at the disconnect and inside the outdoor unit, plus pressurized refrigerant that can cause serious frostbite burns if a line is opened incorrectly. EPA Section 608 certification is legally required to handle refrigerant in California. This is not a weekend project. We don’t say that to scare you off the job; we say it because the two most common DIY failures we get called to fix are electrical faults from improperly torqued lugs and refrigerant leaks from flare fittings that were never made correctly. Both can cost more to repair than the original install would have.
What you can safely check yourself: air filter condition on the indoor unit, whether the outdoor unit’s coil is clogged with leaves or lint, whether the breaker is tripped, and whether the condensate line is draining freely to outside. None of those checks require opening the sealed system or touching electrical connections. If the problem is beyond that, call (213) 531-5904. We’ll talk through the symptoms, give you a straight answer on whether a repair makes more sense than replacement, and schedule a written estimate if you want one.
FAQs
A properly installed and maintained Lennox mini-split in Los Angeles typically lasts 12 to 15 years, with coastal units often running longer due to lower compressor strain and inland units sometimes failing sooner due to sustained high-head-pressure operation. The single biggest factor is installation quality: flare fittings that leak from day one will shorten compressor life by years. Call (213) 531-5904 for an inspection if your system is over ten years old and behaving erratically.
Yes, in many cases. Failed capacitors, contactors, condensate pumps, blower motors, and even electronic expansion valves can be replaced with the unit back up and running same-day or next-day. The line we draw is at the compressor: if the compressor is grounded or the inverter board and compressor have both failed, replacement is usually the better financial decision on a unit more than eight years old. We give honest diagnostics, not upsell scripts.
A single-zone installation typically takes one day. A three-zone or four-zone system with long line-set runs usually takes two days. The variables in Los Angeles are access: second-story wall mounts, stucco drilling, and long conduit runs across condo exteriors all add time. We’ll give you the exact arrival window and completion estimate in your written quote.
We stock the common failure items on our trucks for immediate replacement: capacitors, contactors, fan motors, thermistors, condensate pumps, and drain pans. For model-specific inverter boards and compressors, we order OEM from Lennox and typically have the part within 3 to 5 business days in Los Angeles. We’ll tell you up front whether we can fix it the same day or need to order before dispatching a technician.
If your Lennox mini-split is limping along or dead, call (213) 531-5904. A live person answers, any hour, any day. We’ll give you honest guidance over the phone, then a written price before a single tool comes out. If it moves air or makes heat, we can sort it out.
