Rheem thermostat installation in Los Angeles typically runs $240 – $520 installed, parts and labor included, and we can usually get a technician to your door the same day you call. Most homeowners realize something is wrong when the system short-cycles (turns on and off every few minutes), the temperature on the wall doesn’t match the room, or the heat or AC won’t respond to changes at all. In older Los Angeles homes, especially the 1940s and 1950s bungalows scattered through neighborhoods like Boyle Heights, Highland Park, and West Adams, we routinely pull thermostats that have been on the wall for 20-plus years and are no longer reading temperature accurately enough for a modern Rheem system to run efficiently.
Which Rheem Models This Applies To
This covers essentially every Rheem furnace, air handler, heat pump, and packaged unit sold in the last 25 years, from the Classic and Achiever series up through Rheem’s current Endeavor and Prestige lines. Rheem thermostats are not universal in the way some people assume. Older Rheem systems, particularly those installed before 2010, often use a proprietary communicating protocol called Comfort Control2, which means a generic thermostat from a hardware store simply will not talk to the system. If your Rheem unit has a thermostat with a two-wire or four-wire connection labeled with letters like R, C, W, and Y, it uses standard 24V wiring and nearly any quality thermostat will work. But if you see labels like 1, 2, 3, and 4 or a data port instead of traditional wire terminals, you need a Rheem-specific communicating thermostat, or a tech who knows how to configure a compatible replacement to match it. We stock both categories on our trucks across Los Angeles. Cold Harbour Heating and Air Los Angeles is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Rheem, but we work on these systems every week and carry OEM Rheem thermostats alongside quality aftermarket equivalents like Honeywell and ecobee models that are confirmed compatible with Rheem wiring.
One more compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Rheem heat pumps use a reversing valve that is energized in cooling mode, which is the opposite of brands like Trane and Carrier. A thermostat configured wrong on that single setting will blow hot air when you want cold and cold air when you want heat. We see that mistake at least a few times a month from DIY installs and handyman jobs around Los Angeles.

Signs Your Rheem Thermostat Installation Is Failing
- Temperature swings you can feel room to room. The thermostat’s internal sensor drifts over time, so a setting of 72 might actually be 68 or 76. This happens faster in Los Angeles because coastal humidity and inland heat cycles accelerate sensor wear, especially in homes without central AC running year-round.
- The system short-cycles. If your Rheem furnace or AC kicks on for three minutes, shuts off, then starts again ten minutes later, the thermostat is misreading the room and calling for heat or cooling at the wrong times. It’s hard on the compressor and it shows up on your LADWP bill.
- A blank or fading display. On newer Rheem touchscreen models, the LCD backlight fades first, then the screen goes entirely. On older mechanical thermostats, the mercury bulb inside the housing gradually loses accuracy. Either way, you’re flying blind on what the system is actually doing.
- No response when you adjust the temperature. You turn the dial or tap the screen and nothing happens. The system keeps running at whatever it was doing before. That’s usually a failed relay inside the thermostat or a broken connection at the sub-base wiring.
- The system runs constantly but never reaches the set point. This one fools a lot of people into thinking the furnace or AC is the problem. In our experience across Los Angeles, roughly three in ten no-heat or no-cooling calls end up being a thermostat that’s reading the room temperature wrong, not a mechanical failure at all.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Installed Rheem thermostat replacement in Los Angeles runs $240 – $520. The spread comes down to the thermostat itself. A basic non-programmable Rheem or Honeywell model is on the lower end. A Wi-Fi-enabled Rheem EcoNet or a Honeywell T10 with smart scheduling runs toward the top. What’s included in every one of our quotes: the thermostat itself, the labor to remove the old unit and wire the new one correctly, configuration for your specific Rheem system (including that reversing valve setting on heat pumps), a system test to confirm heating and cooling both respond correctly, and a written guarantee on the work. If the thermostat or our installation fails within 365 days, we come back and replace or correct it at no charge. That guarantee is on paper before our tech leaves your driveway, not something we mention casually on the phone.
For comparison, our broader repair work in Los Angeles runs $175 – $765 for AC repairs and $175 – $825 for furnace repairs, and a thermostat swap lands right in the middle of that range but with no diagnostic fee on top. We also carry and install thermostats for Carrier, Trane, and Lennox systems, so if you have a mixed-brand home, one visit covers it.
DIY or Call Us?
Replacing a thermostat involves low-voltage wiring, so it’s genuinely safer to DIY than most HVAC work. You’re not dealing with line voltage, gas, or refrigerant. That said, the place DIY goes wrong in Los Angeles is almost always wiring misidentification. If your old Rheem thermostat has a C wire tucked behind the wall that isn’t connected, most smart thermostats won’t power up. If you have a communicating Rheem system and try to install a standard thermostat, you can damage the control board in the air handler, which turns a $240 thermostat job into an $800 board replacement. If you’re comfortable checking that your existing wiring has R, C, W, and Y terminals, you can likely swap in a basic model yourself. If any of that made your eyes glaze over, that’s exactly what we’re here for, and the price is the same regardless of how tangled the wiring is. Victor Mancini has been doing this across Los Angeles long enough to have seen every wiring configuration from 1940s wall furnaces to hillside new construction. If it moves air or makes heat, we can sort it out. Call us at (213) 531-5904 and we’ll give you a written price before any work begins.
FAQs
Most Rheem thermostats last 10 to 15 years in Los Angeles before accuracy drifts or the display starts to fail, though older mechanical models can go 20 years or more in mild climates. Coastal humidity and temperature swings shorten that life somewhat compared to inland areas. If yours is older than a decade and you’re noticing comfort or billing changes, it’s worth a look. Call us at (213) 531-5904 and we’ll check it during a routine visit.
In most cases, no. Thermostats are sealed units, and the internal sensors and relays are not serviceable. The exception is a loose wire at the sub-base or corrosion on a terminal, which we can often clean and re-secure in ten minutes. If the thermostat itself is the problem, replacement is the honest fix and usually cheaper than repeated service calls anyway.
Most thermostat replacements in Los Angeles take 45 to 90 minutes from the time our tech arrives. That includes removing the old unit, wiring the new one, configuring it for your Rheem system type, testing both heating and cooling, and walking you through the settings. You’ll have a written price before we start and a written guarantee before we leave.
We stock Rheem OEM thermostats and compatible Honeywell and ecobee models on our trucks, so in most cases we can complete the installation same day. If you have a specialty Rheem communicating thermostat that’s on backorder from the manufacturer, we’ll give you a timeline and a temporary workaround if one is available. But nine times out of ten, the part is already in the truck when we pull up to your door.
