Get your free estimateCarrier Thermostat Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Carrier thermostat installation in Los Angeles typically runs $185 – $475 installed, including the new thermostat, wiring verification, system testing, and our 365-day written guarantee on the work. We stock Carrier-compatible thermostats on our trucks and can usually complete the swap the same day we arrive. Most homeowners call us after their system starts short-cycling, the display goes blank, or the temperature on the wall doesn’t match what the vents are actually putting out.
Here’s what we see constantly across Los Angeles: the thermostat itself is still working, but it’s no longer talking to the furnace or AC properly. A Carrier system is picky about its controls, and a thermostat that drifts five degrees off or drops its programming is doing real damage to your comfort and your utility bill. The good news is this is one of the fastest, most affordable fixes we do, and we’ll hand you a written price before we touch a single wire.
Which Carrier Models This Applies To
Carrier has used several thermostat platforms over the years, and the compatibility question is the first thing we check. If you have a Carrier Infinity system (usually a green-backlit touchscreen model with the Infinity logo), you need a communicating thermostat that speaks Carrier’s proprietary language, not a generic one from the hardware store. Infinity systems built since roughly 2010 use the Infinity Touch or the newer Infinity System Control, and they will not work correctly with a standard 24-volt thermostat, no matter how many wires you have. The older Performance and Comfort series systems, plus most Carrier heat pumps and two-stage furnaces, are far more forgiving and work fine with quality universal thermostats.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for Infinity communicating systems, we recommend staying with Carrier’s own control. The system’s variable-speed blower and modulating gas valve rely on data from that thermostat, and a cheap substitute downgrades the whole setup to basic on-off operation. For standard systems, we stock quality aftermarket options like Honeywell and Ecobee that match or exceed what Carrier sells at the entry level, often at a meaningfully better price. Victor Mancini will tell you straight: we’re not going to sell you a $400 proprietary thermostat when a $120 universal model does the same job on your particular system.
Cold Harbour Heating and Air Los Angeles is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Carrier Corporation, but we’ve installed and serviced Carrier thermostats across the LA basin for over 15 years, and we know which units pair with which systems without guesswork.

Signs Your Carrier Thermostat Installation Is Failing
- Blank or flickering display: Most often a dead battery or a loose connection at the wall plate, but on Infinity controls it can mean the communicating bus has dropped signal. Either way, your system won’t run reliably until it’s sorted.
- System short-cycles (turns on and off every few minutes): The thermostat is misreading room temperature or sending a bad signal. In Los Angeles summer heat, short-cycling an AC compressor is a fast way to shorten its life.
- Room temperature doesn’t match the setting: The sensor has drifted or the thermostat is installed in a bad spot, like a wall that gets direct afternoon sun through a window. We see this constantly in older LA homes.
- Programming resets or won’t hold a schedule: The internal memory is failing, or you have a wiring issue at the sub-base. If you’re reprogramming every morning, the thermostat is done.
- System won’t respond to temperature changes: You bump it from 72 to 68 and nothing happens. The relay inside the thermostat has likely failed, which means the signal never reaches your furnace or AC.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the honest price picture for Carrier thermostat installation in Los Angeles. A basic single-stage thermostat swap runs $185 – $285, parts and labor included. A quality smart thermostat with Wi-Fi, scheduling, and energy reporting runs $300 – $475 installed. An Infinity communicating thermostat replacement, where required, runs $450 – $700 because the control itself is more expensive and the system configuration has to be set up correctly.
| Thermostat Type | Installed Price Range |
|---|---|
| Basic single-stage (non-programmable or 7-day programmable) | $185 – $285 |
| Smart thermostat with Wi-Fi (Honeywell, Ecobee) | $300 – $475 |
| Carrier Infinity communicating control (where required) | $450 – $700 |
Every quote includes the thermostat, wall plate, wiring check, system test in both heat and cool mode, programming setup, and a written explanation of what we installed and why. You get the price before we start, and that price does not change at the door. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the thermostat or our installation fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Thermostat wiring is low-voltage, so the risk of a serious shock is minimal compared to working inside your furnace or condenser. That said, we’ve repaired enough DIY thermostat jobs to know where they go wrong: mismatched wires, no C-wire for smart thermostats, blown control board fuses, and Infinity systems that got a generic thermostat wired in and now run the blower at full speed constantly. If you’re confident with a multimeter and you have a standard one-stage system, a basic swap is doable in an afternoon.
If you have a Carrier Infinity system, a heat pump with auxiliary heat, or you’ve got more than six wires coming out of that wall, call us at (213) 531-5904 before you pull anything apart. The cost of us doing it right the first time is almost always less than the cost of us fixing a crossed wire that fried your control board. And honestly, most of our Los Angeles customers would rather have a written guarantee in hand than a YouTube tutorial open on their phone.
FAQs
Most Carrier thermostats last 10 – 15 years in Los Angeles conditions, though the sensors and relays can start drifting after about 8 years. If yours is older than a decade and acting up, replacement usually makes more sense than repair. Call (213) 531-5904 and we’ll tell you honestly whether yours is worth saving.
Occasionally yes, if the issue is a loose wire, a dead battery, or a dusty sensor. But once the internal relay or circuit board starts failing, repair isn’t practical or cost-effective. We’ll diagnose it for you and give you a straight answer either way.
A standard thermostat swap takes 45 – 90 minutes from arrival to system test. Infinity system configuration can add another 30 minutes. Most Los Angeles customers have us in and out inside a two-hour window.
Yes. We carry universal thermostats, smart thermostats, and Carrier Infinity controls on our trucks, so in most cases we can complete the installation the same day we arrive. We also stock compatible thermostats for Trane and Lennox systems if you have a mixed-brand setup.
